What is Pathology?
Pathology is a branch of medicine that is dedicated to evaluating samples of tissue from the body to determine whether abnormalities are present that may indicate the presence of disease. A branch of pathology called surgical pathology is largely dedicated to examining samples of tissue removed during biopsies or operations to determine whether or not cancer or other diseases that cause abnormal growth of tissue may be present.
Pathologists examine slices of these samples under strong microscopes, focusing on specific features of cells and patterns in which cells are arranged to determine if a cancer is present, and if so, which type of cancer it represents. Pathologists diagnose disease and may aid in the determination of a treatment plan.
